Autumn is a wonderful time to explore Kansai. Released from the stifling heat of summer, it’s a time to be out and about; a time to enjoy clear skies and fresh air amid a changing landscape. The nights become crisp, yet the days retain their warmth - allowing one to relish the stunning autumn foliage, and watch as it enhances the beauty of temples and mountain backdrops.

There are lots of festivals featuring Danjiri, or a portable shrine in Japan, but the one in Kishiwada is very famous because they tow Danjiri carts very fast through streets and sometimes crush at corners. |
Located an hour's drive north-west of Kyoto, the Takao district is extremely beautiful during autumn. Famed for its secluded temples and mountain scenery, it is a popular place to view the fall foliage, and as such, can get crowded. |
In a nation obsessed with food, Osaka is known as an excellent place to eat. Indeed the Osakan's love of food is neatly expressed in local saying kuidaore, or "eat until you drop"! |

Kyoto Gosho (Imperial palace) and Nijo-Jo Kyoto Gosho (Imperial Palace) and nearby Nijo-Jo are well worth a visit. Whilst the Palace is an austere and imposing complex, Nijo-Jo offers a glimpse into the more lavish lifestyle of powerful shogun Tokugawa Ieyasa, and is surrounded by lush gardens. |

Visitors with limited time in Kyoto would be well advised to head for the Higashiyama (lit. eastern mountains) district. An historic area east of the Kamo River, Higashiyama stretches from Gion towards the foothills which give it its name. |

Fall is a lovely season to visit Nara. The hot sticky summer gives way to cooler and clearer days, and as the trees turn crimson, the atmosphere in Nara Park is one of refreshment and invigoration. In addition, a number of interesting events take place during the autumn months. |
